At Dallas City Hall, conversations about the streetcar oscillate between optimistic expansion plans and criticism of DART because of the relatively low ridership and unreliable service. The city pays DART $1.8 million in addition to its regular sales tax contribution, so the gripes are understandable. But what we really need here is a better plan and deeper partnership between the city and DART with the goal of boosting ridership and diversifying funding sources in the short-term.

“This is great news for Oak Cliff and Dallas. I am so proud of the work we’ve done over the years to support this project and secure federal funding,” U.S. Rep. Dallas’ freeway grid might have effectively connected the region, but it has proved a concrete divider for our city’s neighborhoods, with highways like Interstates 30 and 45 choking off areas like southern Dallas from the urban core.

Last year, Historic Hotels of America (HHA), an official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, recognized the oldest hotel in the country’s oldest capital city as a top hotel for magnificent art. Art has been a centerpiece of La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico, since it opened in 1922.

The luxury hotel has been purchased by a venture of Cienda Partners and Pendant Capital, both Dallas investment firms.

“For nearly two decades, Senza has been a passion project for us in a region that holds great meaning to our business and our family,” Craig Hall, founder and chairman of Hall Group, said in a statement.

In north-central New Mexico, in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is the state’s capital, Santa Fe. The heart of the city—whose population is 89,008, according to census data—is its 400-year-old plaza. But outside of town, the 87506 ZIP Code has Santa Fe’s priciest residential real estate as ranked by median listing price, according to Realtor.com.

Santa Fe, New Mexico hotel La Fonda’s move to branch into short-term rentals to accommodate the demand for hotel guests is yet another affirmation in the world of blended travel.

A historic Santa Fe hotel is embarking on a new business venture which they said will help them accommodate more guests. La Fonda On the Plaza is now branching out and offering short-term rentals.

Related purchased the eight-acre site on East Jefferson Boulevard from Cienda Partners last year. It has skyline views and is just across the Jefferson Boulevard Viaduct from downtown Dallas. Cienda still owns more than 30 acres in the area, which are being marketed to apartment and office developers.

A Miami developer is moving ahead with plans to build its first project in north Oak Cliff.

Last year Related Group purchased an 8-acre building site next to the former Oak Farms Dairy property, across the Trinity River from downtown.

Children are curious. Nourish that curiosity with dynamic, engaging lessons, teacher development and on-site support services, and it’s a recipe for future success.

With that premise, Dallas Independent School District, Southern Methodist University (SMU) and the Toyota USA Foundation, in collaboration with nonprofits and the local community, began a new effort in 2018 to co-create a pre-K through eighth grade school in West Dallas called the West Dallas STEM School (WDSS).

A couple miles West of downtown Dallas, on the South side of the Trinity River, Mable Armstrong was using her time and the few resources she had to provide food for the homeless. When her husband, Dr. James Armstrong Sr., wasn’t pastoring the flock of Community Fellowship Church, he was buying up drug homes in the community. This was the only way to really get rid of them, after all.

Mintwood — founded three years ago by executives from one of the area’s biggest apartment firms — is just completing its first ground-up apartment building in North Oak Cliff and is about to start another in the same neighborhood.

The deck park under construction south of downtown Dallas is planned to connect neighborhoods divided by Interstate 35E and bring a new public space to the city.

The 5-acre Southern Gateway Park — under construction over the Interstate between Ewing and Marsalis avenues — is scheduled to open late next year or in early 2024.
